Turkey Yam Shepherds Pie

Recipe Makes 4 Meals

Turkey Layer Ingredients:
1 lb pastured organic turkey breast
1 medium cooking onion diced
3-5 garlic cloves freshly minced
1 large carrot diced
sea salt and pepper to taste
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp dried thyme or rosemary
2 tbsp worchestershire sauce (can be subbed for tamari or brags soy seasoning)
1/2 tsp cayenne powder or 1 tbsp chilli flakes
1 cup frozen green peas, thawed
3 tbsp ground flax seeds
3 tbsp tomato paste

Yam Mash Ingredients:
3 medium-large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped (or sub for 1 large steamed cauliflower for a lower carb option)
2 medium turnips, peeled and chopped (feel free to sub for extra yams if you don't have/like turnips)
2 tbsp grass fed butter
sea salt and pepper to taste
optional fresh dill or parsley to mix in with mash or to garnish

1 Add your yam and turnip if using to a medium pot, cover with water and a lid
2 Bring to a simmer over low-medium heat
3 Allow to simmer for 20-35 minutes until soft while you move onto preparing the turkey

4 Heat 1-2 tbsp cooking oil in a large skillet over low-med heat
5 Add your onion and turkey, sautee until browned
5 Add dry seasonings, garlic and carrots
6 Sautee for another 5-6 minutes until carrots are medium-soft
7 Stir in worchester sauce and tomato paste
8 Remove from heat and stir in ground flax and peas, set aside while going back to mash

9 Preheat oven to 350f, lightly butter a large caserole dish
10 Fork your yams to see if they are tender
11 Once tender, carefully drain the water from the boiled yams
12 Add your butter, salt, pepper and mash with a potato masher or electric mixer for an extra fluffy mash

13 Evenly pat down tukey mix into your caserole dish
14 Follow with your mash, smooth the top with a large spoon or fork
15 optional: top with a few small blobs of butter to brown the tops
16 Bake until browned at the top for 20-30 minutes

Allow to sit out of the oven for 5-10 minutes before serving to set
Sever topped with fresh dill or parsley, If you like fresh herbs a lot you can also add more to your mashed yams before baking
